Ball Impact Device

Calibrated, Compliant with Test Regulations, Easy and Reliable to Use.

As a certified test service provider and specialist in component testing, we have put our expertise into the development of a standardized, validated testing device. We would like to present the Bertrandt Ball Impact Device!

The growing trend for lightweight, multi-material automotive components is leading to the increased use of hybrid plastics in vehicle interiors. These require thorough evaluation and functional testing in real-life vehicle environments. Ball impact tests are used to assess the impact resistance of components and these involve dropping a steel ball of a specified mass through a tube from a specified height onto a horizontal surface of the component that is being tested.

In practice, some components that are installed vertically or at an angle have to be tested in the vehicle, but the ball cannot fall freely in these cases. Our solution is the Bertrandt Ball Impact Device, a portable piece of test equipment that fires a ball with a diameter of 50 mm. The system is based on more than 20 years’ experience of ball impact tests and the development of test standards.

The energy needed to apply the force to the component does not come from a free-falling ball. Instead the kinetic energy is stored in a spring by pre-tensioning and locking it into the required position. When the locking mechanism is released, the ball is accelerated and the energy is applied to the surface of the component.
