Pedestrian Protection (VRU Protection)

Optimum protection for vulnerable road users

Bertrandt is not only a development partner for active and passive pedestrian protection according to Euro NCAP Vulnerable Road User (VRU) Protection we also participate in the development of new requirements and, as an accredited testing laboratory, we can also operate as a technical service.

Why pedestrian protection?

Pedestrian protection (VRU Protection) relates to vulnerable road users such as pedestrians and cyclists. Protecting these road users is an important component on the path towards Vision Zero. Accident scenarios must be recognized and, if a collision cannot ultimately be avoided, the top priority is to reduce the risk of injury to anyone involved. The front end of a vehicle is specifically designed to control the loads exerted on the human body. In order to achieve a robust and reproducible design, the human body is represented by different impactors that address the critical areas for an accident.

Technical service

We ensure the practicality and market release of partner protection systems. As a DAKKS accredited testing laboratory in accordance with DIN ISO 17025:2018 and as a type approval body appointed by the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA), we support our customers in the Europe-wide approval of their products.

Key components of the vehicle front end are developed on the basis of close cooperation between our Simulation and Testing departments. A wide variety of proposed solutions are examined to enable efficient human-vehicle interaction. The challenge lies in the interdisciplinary and sometimes conflicting design of vehicle structures that are in harmony with a human’s ability to withstand loads.

In the convergence process from design to engineering, the necessary deformation spaces are created and designed with regard to their efficient use for an impact. Crash-active systems such as active hoods make it possible to relieve the conflict of objectives between a sporty design and safety-focused engineering. The necessary sensor arrangement for such crash-active systems is also included in the range of partner protection services.

We also work closely with our Electronics Development and Validation units in the field of accident-avoiding functions, such as emergency braking or controlled evasive action systems. In this way, we can make sure that the sensors recognize the object, that the software makes reliable decisions, and that the vehicle controls the brakes and steering safely. As a result, we help to ensure that an accident does not occur in the first place.
